Course Description: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Training, Use and Practice for Health and Medical Personnel (1068137)

Presented by:  Civil Support Team (CST) of the National Guard and the Kansas Department of Health and Environment

The proper, routine and deliberate use of personal protective equipment is a key component of keeping Kansas health and medical personnel safe while responding to a disaster or treating a patient.  Proper and diligent use of PPE is important on a daily basis – not only when responding to patients known to have a highly contagious virus or disease.

The CST unit will provide trainees with a general overview of the proper use of Tier 1 and Tier 2 PPE; additionally, there will be ample time for trainees to observe and practice donning and doffing PPE.  Training objectives are:

1. Attendees will describe the difference in levels of Personal Protective Equipment used in health and medical situations related to infectious disease treatment and containment.
2. Attendees will discuss proper techniques for donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment.
3. Attendees will demonstrate strategies to provide additional support to the donning and doffing process – through “buddy system”, visual aids, verbal cues, checklists, etc.
4. Attendees will practice donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment based on their facilities available equipment (each participant should bring the Tier 1 and 2 PPE they use at their specific facility).
